Bible Study TONIGHT 11/25 @ 1st Presbyterian Church

Hi everyone,
In lieu of the Bible study that we’d otherwise have on Friday, we will instead be combining with Koinonia and Acts 2 Fellowship campus groups for a joint Bible study tonight.  Details as follows:

Location: 1st Presbyterian Church (Channing/Dana)
Time: 8pm, Tonight.

(There will be a one-hour prayer meeting before the Bible study, which is actually the regular prayer meeting for Gracepoint Fellowship Church, just for your additional information)

We’ll resume the Friday Bible studies after Thanksgiving!

If I don’t see you tonight, or before the weekend, I, on behalf of the Kairos 4 staff, really wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving!!  Don’t eat too much!  I know I will!

:)

A picture is worth a thousand words. How about 20 pictures, then? You do the math. Below is just a quick snapshot of the awesome half day hiking trip that Berkeley Kairos 4 took at Muir Woods. The weather was nice and cool, which actually worked to our advantage.

Enough talk… enjoy the pictures.

See you at our next nature excursion!

Mission Night, this Friday 9/26, 7pm

We will be having a special event on Friday called “Mission Night”, where we will learn, watch videos, and hear stories how God has worked in our lives from all the different summer mission trips that members and college students from Gracepoint Fellowship Church went on. Many of your fellow Kairos 4 staffers went on these trips over the summer like Taiwan, Cambodia, and Kyrgyzstan.

We will start off with our usual dinner at the YWCA this Friday @ 6pm.

Afterwards, we’ll walk together to First Presbyterian Church where we will join up with 2 other campus fellowships, Koinonia, and A2F for Mission Night. Hope to see you there! It’s going to be an eye-opening night for sure!

Kairos 4 Kickoff!

I had a pretty memorable night last night. We had our first official get-together last night at the Y. I was so excited that a handful of new (and not so new) students came to check out our kickoff. We started off with a delicious dinner that consisted of a chicken stew dish made from scratch by our one and only Debbie. I’ve had it before and I always love eating it! Then we followed up by having a time of ice-breakers with the premise of answering this question: Imagine if you were a vehicle, what would you be and why? One person responded that she would be a Jeep because she was outdoorsy, another a bulldozer (yikes!), a submarine, an X-Wing starfighter (cool!), and yours’ truly, a U-Haul truck. If you weren’t there, you’re going to have to ask these people for their reasons they chose those vehicles!

Welcome! Nice and cozy Fireside Room at the Y.

We then followed that up with a short Bible study given by Tim, which was interspersed with a detailed account of his life, and how it all fit into what God was teaching him and showing him at different stages  (childhood, high school, college at Cal, etc.).

I think we all walked away from the study with the understanding that, as God’s people, we are going through this life journey together. Yeah, we all come from different walks of life, but God desires us to get relational with one another (and to go through life experiences together), as we relate to Him.

We topped off the night by going to Ghirardelli in SF, where all the guys shared an Earthquake, and the girls paired off to share desserts that were more manageable and less beastly. They were missing out in my honest opinion. Haha.

Earthquake. The guys' responses...

Earthquake. The guys' reactions...

The gals, and their easy-to-manage desserts.

The gals, and their easy-to-manage desserts.

The aftermath... Devastation!

The aftermath... Devastation!

Before and after... Something in the ice cream?

Before and after... Something in the ice cream?

And that’s a wrap… until next Friday. If you guys couldn’t make it out last night, be sure to come out next Friday! You don’t want to miss it. Oh and in case you didn’t hear, we’re gonna try to set up a big game of co-ed Ultimate Frisbee next week. Who’s game?

Stay cool out there.

New Student Welcome Night was AWESOME!

Man, it was the best NSWN yet.  All three groups got together and we had a massive BBQ.  Last year, we ran out of meat, and had to go buy some chicken nuggets or something at Safeway.  This year, we were prepared and had plenty for everyone to come back for seconds, thirds, and even fourths!

It was amazing seeing Pauley Ballroom packed with so many people.  We even had to kick out our upperclassmen because there were so many people.  I heard that some late-comers had to be turned away because there was no room.  That’s too bad…I hope they come back for Friday’s event, though!

The music was rockin’ and the new video was well-done.  All that work setting up the trusses and lights made for a very concert-like feel.  Man, that was cool!  Pastor Ed’s message was great, also, as he talked about how we try to specialize ourselves and put on masks so that we can improve our self-image.  Well, hopefully, we can start up a bunch of small groups this year and really experience fellowship and growth in Christ!  In case you missed NSWN I, here’s the small group video:

If you weren’t there yesterday, maybe we’ll see you tomorrow at NSWN II!

New Student Welcome Night!

Check this out! New Student Welcome Night!

Man, NSWN always brings back good memories of undergrad. This is one of the events where all of Gracepoint Berkeley gets together and puts forth its best work. It’s truly THE most happenin’ event during all of Welcome Week!

CalConnect-ed

I really had a great time meeting the soon-to-be freshmen at both Sactown and Fresno. I was so excited that they were starting the next 4 years of their life at Cal, bringing me back to my undergrad days. I got this funny question that just shows how much times are changing. One girl asked me, “why is the signup system called TELE-bears?” I explained to her that back in the stone age, we had to call in on the phone to signup for our classes. During Calso, we all spend time in the dorm hallway, each curled over a thick schedule of classes (paperback) trying to press in our SID without being logged out. Oh, the good ole days. :)

One thing I noticed right away at both places.. It was HOT!! You guys are going to love bay area weather, with crisp mornings and sunny afternoons. Bring a jacket. Especially in the morning, it can get chilly with a serious overcast but it burns off by lunch time.

I answered a bunch of questions about what school life is like, Berkeley area, and how to get into classes. I explained that there was no attendance or hw (for some classes) but that a midterm and a final could determine your entire semester grade! One girl asked me about self paced classes and another on how to audit classes. I did the usual introductions to the best places to eat, sleep on campus and where to get “strong” coffee. Used books and book buy back were popular questions too. So the three (not so evident) items I recommended bringing to the dorms were; a HandVac, a doorstop and flipflips for shower. Yes, the third is definitely necessary!

We’re going to have a CalConnect Reunion on Monday of Welcome Week at 2440 Dana (corner of Dana and Haste), 7pm to get all the CalConnect peeps in touch again. It will be cool to see other people form your area and from other CalConnect groups too. Oh, you could also possibly talk about carpooling back home together during breaks and/or weekends. Save gas.

So hopefully you’re all packed and enjoying the last bit of summer before you hit the books. We’re all excited for your time at Cal. See you on Monday!
